JRC Volunteer Efforts

Did you know that the JRC leads several weed-pulling volunteer events along the Jordan River Parkway Trail each year?

We've also built an amazing partnership with local non-profit, Splore to hold in-river trash clean-ups too!  This year, employees from Wells Fargo enjoyed learning to canoe while they cleaned up the river!

We are so grateful for the contributions of our community members. We hope you are able to join us next year

Presenting the Best Practices for Riverfront Communities

This is an exciting time for the Commission. In a little over two years the JRC assembled a team of Jordan River experts, hired the best consultants, and worked tirelessly to create a document that is the first of its kind in Utah (and poised to be a model document for other communities in the West). And we're pleased to share that in September, 1000 copies of the
Best Practices for Riverfront Communities document were delivered to our offices.

In addition, the document was selected for an award from the Utah Chapter of the American Planning Association!

Announcing the JRC's Small Grants Program

The JRC is excited to announce a small grants program available to its member governments and community partners. The program offers small matching grants, up to $2,500, for projects that help implement the goals of the Blueprint Jordan River and the purposes of the Jordan River Commission. Grant proposals are accepted on a rolling basis and are evaluated by the Governing Board.

ReAwakened Beauty: Place-based learning on the Jordan River

Share your ideas for our newest project -

an interactive, educational, mobile website about the Jordan River, developed by you!

Thanks to an Urban Waters Grant from the EPA, we're turning the Jordan River Parkway into a nature center without walls.  Parkway visitors will be able to learn about Jordan River ecology, water quality, recreation, and more simply by visiting a website linked to educational "stops" along the trail. Submit your photographs, poetry, personal stories and ideas!

Five Star Restoration Grant

The JRC is thrilled to announce that we recently received a $50,000 grant from the EPA and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Five Star Restoration Grant, in addition to a $18,200 UDAF ISM grant.  These grants will kick off the first on-the-ground efforts of the Big Bend Habitat Restoration Project, a 70-acre, multi-phase restoration project being led by the City of West Jordan.

This grant will remove invasive Russian Olive, Tamarisk and herbaceous weeds from a 20-acre section of the project area, to prepare it for restoration.

Puncturevine (Goathead) Grant

Do goathead thorns ruin your bike rides along the Jordan River Parkway Trail? Ours too! So we're excited to share that the JRC (and its partner Salt Lake County) received a $16,000 grant to help us determine the most effective strategies for managing this notorious weed.

This grant from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food is allowing us to try chemical, manual, and biological controls (goathead eating insects!). Yes, there is a little bug that lives only on puncturevine, and they are helping us manage this weed.

Together, we're working to make the trail more enjoyable for everyone.

Farewell Summer

We've been busy this summer! There's just over 20 Saturdays from May 1st to October 1st, and our three person team has:

  • had booths at 8 community fairs
  • worked with hundreds of volunteers at more than 20 weed pull events
  • helped 2 Boy Scouts with their Eagle project
  • attended 6 community council meetings
  • held 3 community workshops for our Urban Waters project with Salt Lake County and CDEA
And we're not done yet. There's still more work to do along the trail before the snow falls in this valley.

About the Jordan River Commission

The Jordan River Commission was created by an interlocal cooperation agreement in August 2010. The Commission was created to implement the concepts and projects outlined in the Blueprint Jordan River, to serve as a technical resource to local communities, and to provide a forum for regional coordination of planning, restoration, and responsible development along the river corridor.
